European Conservatives welcome Hernando De Soto

PRESS RELEASE

07.04.2016.

PRESS RELEASE OF THE ALLIANCE OF EUROPEAN CONSERVATIVES AND REFORMISTS (AECR)

On Tuesday 5 April 2016, AECR MEPs welcomed renowned Peruvian economist Hernando de Soto in Brussels.

The purpose of these meetings was to discuss de Soto’s influential work on the informal economy and on the importance of business and property rights. Moreover, the MEPs personally thanked him for his profound contributions to recent European property rights policies.

De Soto met with the Conservative MEPs Nirj Deva (who spearheaded property rights legislation as Vice-Chair of the Development Committee), Andrew Lewer and Amjad Bashir; AECR Secretary General Daniel Hannan MEP; representatives from New Direction – the Foundation for European Reform; and with well-respected German Professor of Economics Joachim Starbatty MEP.

Deva told de Soto:

Your outstanding work has changed the Conservative Party’s development policies. The entire party has followed your line and put your great ideas into European policy. Thank you!

De Soto is the President of the Institute for Liberty and Democracy (ILD), one of the world’s most influential think tanks. He works with developing countries to implement property and business rights reforms that provide the legal tools and institutions required for citizens to participate in the formal national and global economy.

Notes to editors:

1. Time magazine chose de Soto as one of the five leading Latin American innovators of the century in its special May 1999 issue “Leaders for the New Millennium,” and included him among the 100 most influential people in the world in 2004. De Soto was also listed as one of 15 innovators “who will reinvent your future,” according to Forbes magazine’s 85th anniversary edition. Former US President Bill Clinton described him as “the world’s most important living economist.”

2. The ILD – headquartered in Lima, Peru – is considered by The Economist to be one of the two most important think tanks in the world. It works toward a world in which all people have equal access to secure rights to their real property and business assets in order to pull themselves – and their countries – out of poverty.
