The launch of The Conservative, a quarterly journal of and online platform for Centre-Right thought was a phenomenal success. The Conservative will aim to give a platform to original Centre-Right writing of every hue, from monarchist to minarchist. All contributors have one thing in common: they are conservatives, moved by respect for the things that make us what we are, our nations, our laws, our families, our customs.
Several conservative luminaries gave speeches at the launch, including ACRE Secretary General Daniel Hannan MEP, who gave an impassioned speech both about the concept of The Conservative, and highlighted the theme of this quarterly issue, Conservatism and the Environment:
With ownership comes stewardship: It is ancient Aristotelian wisdom that which nobody owns, nobody cares for
Lord Matt Ridley, author of The Rational Optimist and prominent centre-right commentator and optimist, in the modern sense, celebrated human progress:
We’ve reduced the amount of land we need to produce a set amount of food by 60% in my lifetime
Finally, ECR chairman Syed Kamall MEP, who highlighted the importance of open discourse:
Hayek said if you want to move forward liberty there must be places where people can discuss ideas
