Blue-Green Summit

Blue Green Summit III

3 April 2019  |  Solvay Library, Brussels

“Conservatives are natural conservationists. On 3 April, in Brussels, ACRE will be organising a one day seminar looking at how we can best improve our environment using market mechanisms; the innovation that comes from capitalism, and the natural sense of trusteeship that is part of Burkean conservatism. Do please come along. Environmentalism, and the world we live in, are altogether too important to be left to the left.”

ACRE

Blue Green Summit III

Water and Waste Management
Discussing the power of market competition to inspire clean and efficient water and waste. Recognising that government regulation and individual benevolence, alone, are forecast to be insufficient to face the environmental challenges ahead, this panel will discuss the need for breakthroughs in green technology, and the regulatory structures that best allow these to take place. Significant innovation breakthroughs will make the green option the cost-effective one; such that economic development and environmental improvement can be concurrent phenomena as often as possible.

Clean Energy Panel
Discussing the power of private and corporate ownership to inspire the sustainable management of natural resources in the energy sphere. This panel will discuss the power in the processes of the market itself; particularly the ways in which new technology is encouraging sustainable stewardship.  Particular focus will be on Carbon Capture Schemes and the use of natural resources. Other trusteeship-based market concepts such as natural capital, carbon trading schemes and catch-shares will also be discussed here.

Ross Mckenzie

Head of Public Affairs at Drax Group

Ross McKenzie is Head of Public Affairs at Drax Group.  As part of Drax’s wide portfolio of assets and businesses, Drax operates the UK’s largest single site renewable electricity producer and Europe’s largest decarbonisation project – Drax Power Station. Having successfully upgraded half of the power station from coal to sustainably sourced biomass, in 2018, Drax Power Station generated 12% of the UK’s renewable electricity.

In January 2018, Drax expanded its portfolio to include flexible, renewable and low carbon generating assets from pumped storage, run-of-river hydro and gas.  As a result, Drax can now supply power to 8.3 million UK homes as well as an increased range of system services such as flexibility and inertia.  Furthermore, Drax is trialling world leading carbon capture technology with bioenergy (BECCS), which if successful could enable Drax to become carbon negative.

Drax also includes Haven Power and Opus Energy which supply energy and energy services to over 300,000 UK businesses. In 2018 Drax helped its customers sell 1 TWh of their own renewable power back to the grid.

Prior to joining Drax Group Ross was a policy advisor to Ian Duncan MEP in the European Parliament.  During this time, he worked on several pieces of EU energy and climate change legislation including the reform of EU Emissions Trading System reform, which has seen the cost of carbon pollution rise substantially.
